Pete Rose/Bench Gambling Discussion: Luxury Versus Treacherous Hedonism

Johnny Bench: Pete Rose Shouldn't Be in the Baseball Hall of Fame | The Dan Patrick Show | 7/17/18, Dan Patrick Show, Published on Jul 17, 2018

Pete Rose was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His hitting record speaks for itself. He doesn't need to be in the Hall of Fame; he already proved himself. Whether a committee decides whether he is acceptable for their choice of athletes who should be remembered or not cannot annul his life time career. If he isn't formally accepted, hitters and the public will not forget him. I personally believe some of the most talented people are unknowns in some cases. The player has left his print in the sand.

As to baseball gambling, casino gambling, state lotteries, pool player gambling and all other types, it would be appropriate for a nation to ban such evil vices. Gambling is related to covetousness, and the Bible says, “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.” (Ex. 20:17, KJV) A gambler tends to be attracted in a more than generous way to the money of his contemporary environment. If it leads to disobeying God, it is evil. We are living in the apostasy and must remember the Ten Commandments and develop a decent community for our youth to grow up in.

You can't live in sin and not confess it without losing respect. Johnny Bench made a moral point that Pete Rose did not deserve honor.

On the other hand, Tim Tebow learned about and praised Jesus, and gave of himself while earning respect among Christians and the world. It is better to give than to receive, and especially not to covet or take from others in a dishonorable way.

Pete Rose thinks people should get over it. Should we? Well, we can certainly forgive Pete and pray for him. It will be up to him to make a decision for Jesus Christ if he really wants to find out what's missing in his life.
